Biodiversity loss
Biodiversity loss means a reduction in the variety of living organisms—plants, animals, and microorganisms—in a place or on Earth as a whole.
- What “variety of life” includes: different species (like tigers, frogs, mangroves), different habitats (forests, wetlands, coral reefs), and even differences within a species (like many varieties of rice).
- How it happens: species can become rare or extinct, habitats can shrink or break into small patches, and ecosystems can become less balanced and less able to support many forms of life.
- Main human causes: deforestation and land conversion for farming or cities, pollution (including pesticides and plastics), overfishing and hunting, invasive species, and climate change that alters temperature and rainfall patterns.
- Why it matters to people: biodiversity supports ecosystem services—clean air and water, soil fertility, pollination of crops, natural control of pests, and protection from floods and storms (for example, mangroves reduce coastal damage).
- A concrete example: when wetlands are drained for construction, many fish, birds, and insects lose breeding and feeding areas; this can reduce fish catch, increase mosquito problems, and weaken natural water filtration.
