acquired immunity

Acquired immunity is the protection your body develops after it has learned to recognise a germ (often through a vaccine or after an infection).

  • How it forms: When the immune system meets a pathogen (or a safe “practice version” in a vaccine), it makes special defenders called antibodies and trains certain white blood cells to fight it.
  • Memory is the key idea: The immune system creates memory cells that “remember” the germ. If the same germ enters again later, the body responds faster and stronger, often stopping illness before you even notice.
  • Vaccines build it safely: A vaccine gives your immune system a harmless preview (weakened/dead germ, a part of it, or instructions to make a harmless part), so you gain protection without getting the disease.
  • Real-life example: After a tetanus shot, your body learns to recognise the tetanus toxin and prepares defences, so a future exposure is much less dangerous.
  • Not the same as “natural” immunity: Babies get some ready-made protection from their mother (a different kind called passive immunity), but acquired immunity is the one your body builds and remembers over time.

Because acquired immunity can last for years (sometimes lifelong), it is one of the strongest ways the body learns to protect itself from specific diseases.
