Rajputs were groups of warrior clans in north and north-west India who became powerful rulers of many kingdoms, especially in Rajasthan, and were known for their military skill and strong sense of honour and independence.

Who they were: The word “Rajput” is often linked to “son of a king” (raj-putra). In practice, it meant members of certain clans (large kin groups) who claimed a warrior status and ruled forts, towns, and surrounding countryside.
Where they ruled: Many Rajput kingdoms were based in regions like Mewar, Marwar, Amber (Jaipur area), and other parts of present-day Rajasthan and nearby areas.
How their society worked: Rajput power was closely tied to land, forts, and loyal fighters. Chiefs and nobles supported their rulers with soldiers, and in return received land, titles, and prestige.
Why they mattered in medieval politics: Rajput states often stood between invading armies and the interior of India. Their resistance (and sometimes alliances) shaped how far big empires could control the region.
Example you can picture: Forts like Chittorgarh (Mewar) became symbols of Rajput strength—forts were not just buildings, but centres of administration, defence, and pride.
Not all the same: “Rajputs” were not one single kingdom or one united army. Different clans had their own rulers and interests, so they could fight together at times, but also compete with each other.

Understanding the Rajputs helps explain why control over Rajasthan was difficult for large empires: the region’s strong forts, local loyalties, and determined rulers made outside authority hard to enforce.
